RICHARD of ST. VICTOR ~ ARCHITECTURAL EXEGESIS

The TEMPLE of EZEKIEL, as IMAGINED by RICHARD of ST. VICTOR

back to main page

Richard of St. Victor was one of the great doctors of the 12th century, writing works of mystical, dogmatic and exegetical theology from the renowned Augustinian Abbey in Paris. His commentaries on the Book of Ezekiel contained, among his sublime insights, some speculative architectural plans of the temple revealed to Ezekiel (see chapters 40, 41, 42, 43). The following images are taken from a volume (currently owned by Beinecke Library of Yale University) of Richard's complete works published in 1518, copying 12th and 13th century manuscripts of his commentary.
