back to main page
Hucbaldus Elnonensis, or Hucbald of St. Amand, was a Benedictine monk, hagiographer, composer, and music theorist who lived two generations after Charlemagne. He authored a humorous Latin poem entitled Ecloga de Calvis, or In Praise of Bald Men, dedicated to Archbishop Hatto and Emperor Charles the Bald, in which every word in 136 lines begins with the letter C. It explains the various ways in which bald men are superior warriors, priests, lovers, artists, musicians and emperors to those with hair.
